October is National Physical Therapy Month

col-JillPhelanThe weather is beginning to cool, football is in full gear and the leaves are starting to change, fall has officially come to the Grand Strand! You’re likely preparing for the holiday fiasco that is the final quarter of the year when in one moment you are helping your kids and grandkids into their ghoulish costumes and then before you know it you’re making a mad dash to the Thanksgiving table, lighting the menorah, wrapping those much anticipated Christmas gifts and cruising to the finish line as you celebrate the New Year.

But before you get enveloped in the holiday season, I wanted to bring your attention to a much less renowned cause, your musculoskeletal and neurological health. October is annual Physical Therapy month in which we recognize and raise awareness how the field can help to engage individuals in a healthy lifestyle. Everyday people are suffering from aches and pains, whether it is a bum knee, creaky shoulder, bulging disc, rheumatoid arthritis, or bouts of dizziness and falling. Each of these cases and more can trigger one to be severely limited in their day-to-day function, causing them to be more reliant on others for what used to be simple tasks, in greater pain or discomfort and less confident in their own ability to move independently.
