O’Dell wins state swim title, leads strong CAC showing

cac-odellSouth Carolina Swimming welcomed swimmers from 22 Swim Clubs to its annual Long Course Championship meet this weekend at the Carolina Natatorium on the campus of the University of South Carolina, and the Myrtle Beach-based Coastal Aquatic Club came home with a state champion and club record holder in Jordyn O’Dell.

O’Dell won the gold medal in the 100 backstroke with a club-record setting performance, and she also set the CAC record in the 50 freestyle. Other top CAC performers included:

• Taylor Steele was 10th in 100 Breast.
• Girls 400 IM Relay (Jordyn O’Dell, Taylor Steele, Kennedy Drew, and Karly O’Dell), 5th Place.
• Boys 400 Free Relay (Sean King, Casey Mitchell, John Grey Crosby, and Tyler Eldred), 7th Place.
• Girls 400 Free Relay (Jordyn O’Dell, Kennedy Drew, Taylor Steele, and Karly O’Dell), 7th Place.
• Tyler Eldred, Jordyn O’Dell, and Taylor Steele all qualified for the “B” or Consolation Final in at least one event.
• Five new CAC club records were set:  Jordyn O’Dell (50 Free, 100 Back); Taylor Steele (100 Breast, 200 Breast); and Summer Ratley (200 Butterfly).

Swimmers age 10-and-under used the timed-finals format during the afternoon session.  That is, swimmers posted a single time per event and those times were used to determine the top finishers.  Older swimmers (ages 11 and up) had a preliminary qualifying session in the morning and a Finals session in the evening including the top 10 qualifiers from the morning session. A consolation final (qualifiers 11-20) was also held for senior swimmers (age 15 and older). Swimmers were restricted to competing in 8 individual events over the 4-day meet (even if they had qualified to swim in more races).

As the long-course swimming season winds down, CAC swimmers will take the month of August off and resume club swimming after Labor Day.  During this period, swimmers 7th grade and up will train and compete for their respective high schools; including: Carolina Forest, Conway, Myrtle Beach Christian Academy, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Socastee, St. James, and Waccamaw High School.
