Tepesch, Reyes throw first no-hitter in Pelicans’ history

One start after allowing a career high 13 hits against the Salem Red Sox, Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitcher Nick Tepesch responded by allowing none.

The righty combined with reliever Jimmy Reyes to throw the first nine inning no-hitter in team history Saturday, beating the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 3-0, at Frawley Stadium.

Tepesch tossed 115 pitches in seven and one third innings, a career long outing for the starter.  He struck out nine batters, one short of a career high.  He had a season high six K’s by the fourth inning.  Reyes came in to get the final five outs, facing four batters after inducing a double play to end the 8th inning.

All four Wilmington runners to reach base did so on walks, with three taking their base on a full count.  The first walk was issued to Brian Fletcher in the fourth inning and the second to Brett Eibner in the seventh.  Tepesch then walked the first two batters of the eight, Roman Hernandez and Kevin David, before striking out Juan Graterol and departing.

Reyes entered in a tenuous spot.  Only working with  a 3-0 lead, the game was still up for grabs with the tying run at the plate.  Reyes, however, needed only three pitches to induce a 4-6-3 double play and end the inning.  He struck out two in the ninth for his first save of the year.

Defensively, the best play of the night belonged to third baseman Christian Villanueva, who dove to take away a hit from Hernandez in the fifth inning.  Only five balls were hit beyond the infield by Wilmington.

It had been 12 years since Tim Spooneybarger and Christian Parra combined to throw a seven inning no-hitter for the Pelicans in 2000, the first and only no-no in team history prior to Saturday.

On offense, the Pelicans scored two runs in the sixth inning, stringing together six consecutive hits.  The big blow was a two-run double by Brett Nicholas.  Outfielder Jake Skole singled in the seventh to snap an 0-26 slide.

The Pelicans and Blue Rocks continue their three game series Sunday at 1:35 from Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.
