Pelicans and Red Sox split twin bill to end road trip

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (51-37, 11-8), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, split a double-header Thursday with the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field. The Birds won the first game 3-2 in eight innings before dropping the second game 3-1. The Pelicans finished the eight-game road trip at 4-4.

Nick Martinez (7-6) went the distance for the Birds in game two, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over six innings. Miguel Pena followed suit for Salem, hurling seven innings of one-run, three-hit baseball in a winning effort.

Edwin Garcia paced the Pelicans in game two finishing 2-for-3. Preston Beck knocked in the only run with an RBI groundout.

Trever Adams hit a two-out, go-ahead RBI triple in the eighth inning of the first game, helping the Pelicans earn an extra inning win. It was his first triple of the season and came off right-hander Nefi Ogando (2-2), who took the loss out of the bullpen. Joe Van Meter (3-4) worked a scoreless seventh and eighth inning and claimed the win.  The Red Sox stranded a runner at third in both of those innings.

Luke Jackson started for Myrtle Beach and allowed two earned runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked a season-high five batters. Stefan Welch hit a two-run single against him in the fifth inning. Henry Owens started for the Sox and went 6.2 innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits. A Jake Skole RBI fielder’s choice in the second inning led to a throwing error which plated a second run.

The Pelicans return home to begin a four-game series Friday with the Winston-Salem Dash at TicketReturn.com Field. Right-hander Alec Asher (5-5, 3.36) will be opposed by righty Jake Cose (1-3, 6.34). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Slap Koozie. It will also be a Fiesta Friday presented by Abuelos. It will also be ‘90s night at the ballpark. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by calling 918-6000.
