Pelicans’ bats explode in 10-4 win over Winston-Salem

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, guaranteed their second series win of the season Tuesday, dropping the visiting Winston-Salem Dash 10-4 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Myrtle Beach jumped on Winston-Salem starter Jake Petricka early and often, scoring three runs in each the first and third innings.  In both frames the Pelicans sent seven batters to the plate.

Odubel Herrera led off the first with a single down the leftfield line.  He moved to third when Tomas Telis reached on an error by the Dash shortstop Marcus Semien.  Christian Villanueva then singled ahead of a wild pitch to score Telis.  On the same play Villanueva came home on an error by Winston’s catcher Mike Blanke.  It was 3-0.

The Pelicans surrendered one of those runs back in the third when starter Cody Buckel walked the bases loaded before a wild pitch.  It was Buckel’s lone blemish.  He picked up the win with five two-hit innings.

Myrtle Beach wasted no time getting the run right back in the bottom of the inning.  Telis and Brett Nicholas both picked up RBI hits, Nicholas a two out double to make it 6-1, giving the Pelicans their largest lead since Opening Day.

The Birds added two more in the fourth on a two run double by Villanueva.  The Pelicans third baseman now has four knocked in on the season and the Pelicans led 8-1.

After allowing three runs in the sixth to the Dash, the Pelicans lead shrunk to 8-4.  The close game was short lived when the Pelicans scored again in the eighth inning.  With one out Santiago Chirino reached on an error, the fourth for W-S.  Josh Richmond then walked ahead of a Herrera double to plate them both.  Herrera was thrown out trying to make it a triple.  It was 10-4.

Buckel earned the win in his start.  The loss is charged to Petricka. Jimmy Reyes and Ben Henry both pitched shutout baseball in relief for Myrtle Beach.   Eight of the nine Pelicans in the order reached base, either safely or otherwise.  Herrera finished 3-5 with two runs and two RBI.
