Pelicans battle past Dash; lose top prospect in trade

After a 6-4 extra-inning win for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday night over the Winston-Salem Dash from BB&T Ballpark, the second game of the doubleheader was postponed until Wednesday due to inclement weather.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the eighth inning, the Pelicans (57-69, 23-33) grabbed the lead for good over the Dash (75-49, 34-20). Wladimir Galindo , who started the inning at second, scored when Roberto Caro reached on an error against Hunter Schryver (0-1). Yeiler Peguero , who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, put down a perfect bunt for an RBI single later in the inning to make it 6-4.

Garrett Kelly (2-0), who went to school in Winston-Salem at Wake Forrest, earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

After an RBI fielder’s choice from Nick Madrigal gave the Dash a 1-0 advantage, the Pelicans took the lead in the fifth. D.J. Wilson knocked in Zach Davis with an RBI ground out before Aramis Ademan gave the Birds the lead with an RBI single.

In the bottom of fifth inning, the Dash knotted the game up at 2-2 when Laz Rivera smacked an RBI single.

Peguero then capped a two-out rally for the Pelicans with a two-run single in the sixth, making it 4-2.

Winston-Salem stormed right back, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth. Gavin Sheets singled in a run and Yermin Mercedes then scored on a passed ball to clasp the game at 4-4.

Earlier Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs announced the following roster moves affecting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans:

-INF Andruw Monasterio has been traded to the Washington Nationals.
-RHP Bailey Clark has been activated from the 7-day disabled list.

Monasterio was traded to Washington in the deal that netted the Cubs infielder Daniel Murphy. The Caracas, Veneuela native was batting .263/.359/.336 with 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 109 games. Over his last 28 contests, Monasterio hit .303/.398/.393 with two doubles, two homers, nine RBIs and 13 walks. He split the 2017 campaign between Myrtle Beach and Low-A South Bend, slashing a combined .270/.341/.346 to go along with 17 doubles, two triples, one home run, 28 RBIs and eight steals.

Clark went on the disabled list on June 6 and missed 68 games. He has appeared in eight games with Myrtle Beach in 2018, making two starts. Over 27.2 innings, he has gone 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA, striking out 32 against 14 walks in 27.2 frames. The Asheville, N.C., native began the year with Low-A South Bend, where he whiffed 19 against three walks in five games over 14.1 innings. The right-hander posted a 1-0 record and 1.26 ERA. Clark was originally drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2016 draft out of Duke University. During his junior season at Duke in 2016, Clark helped lead the Blue Devils to their first NCAA postseason appearance since 1961 by averaging a team-high 9.7 strikeouts per game. Overall, he went 4-4 with a 5.61 ERA in 59.1 innings (64 K, 26 BB).

The Pelicans take on Winston-Salem from BB&T Ballpark at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for the first game of a doubleheader.
