Pelicans cap perfect week; Gallo captures CL award

pel-14galloThe Myrtle Beach Pelicans won their seventh straight game road game with a 9-6 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Monday afternoon at Lewis-Gale Field.

The Pelicans erased two deficits and got homers from Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro to take the road trip and series finale. Gallo was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for his role in leading the Pelicans to an undefeated week.

The Pelicans (7-4) secured the opening lead of the game in the second. Jorge Alfaro blasted a home run to left, his first of the season, to give Myrtle Beach an early 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however. Salem (6-5) loaded the bases against Pelicans starter Victor Payano, and Matty Johnson drove all three runners home with a double to left to give Salem their second lead of the series.

The back-and-forth affair had three ties and two lead changes, and Myrtle Beach tied it back up in the next half inning. Hanser Alberto led off the frame with a double. After two groundouts, Joey Gallo blasted a high home run to left field, tying the game at 3-3. It was the fifth home run in five days for the newly awarded Carolina League Player of the Week.

Payano loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third, but Alexander Claudio came on and got a groundball double play to end the threat with the game still tied. Payano went just 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

Salem scored three runs off of Claudio in the fourth inning. The left-hander had not given up a run in his first nine Pelicans innings before a four-hit frame gave the Red Sox a 6-3 lead.

Starter Kyle Kraus kept the Birds’ bats quiet in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, Chris Garia led off with an infield singe and Gallo followed with a walk. That brought on reliever Madison Younginer who gave up back-to-back doubles to Alfaro and Preston Beck, who had a three-hit game, tying the game at 6-6. Hanser Alberto doubled later in the frame, giving the Pelicans a 7-6 that they would sustain the rest of the way.

Gallo added runs in the seventh and ninth on sacrifice flies, extending the lead to 8-6 and 9-6 respectively. Over the final five innings, Salem picked up just three baserunners, all on singles, and did not score. Two double plays helped the cause; Myrtle Beach turned six in the series and have 12 for the year—the most in the league.

Odubel Herrera went hitless in the ballgame. His team-high hitting streak of eight games was snapped.

The seven road wins in-a-row matches the longest road wining streak in Pelicans history (at least dating back to the beginning of 2004), set in 2004 and tied in 2008.

The Pelicans travel back to Myrtle Beach after seven games away from home, opening a seven-game homestand on Tuesday.
