Pelicans continue red-hot June with shutout of Keys

pel-alzolayAdbert Alzolay’s seven shutout innings Tuesday were backed by a Matt Rose RBI double and P.J. Higgins solo home run to lift the Myrtle Beach Pelicans over the Frederick Keys by a final of 2-0 from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Alzolay (6-1) tossed seven shutout innings for Myrtle Beach (39-26), striking out six Keys (29-35) and scattering five hits en route to his sixth victory of the season. Pedro Araujo entered the contest in the eighth inning and punched out the side. In the ninth. Aruajo walked one batter in the ninth but fanned Alex Murphy to end the contest, which gave the Birds their league-high eighth shutout of the season.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to an early lead in the second. Eloy Jimenez bashed a base hit to left field to begin the frame for the Birds. With two men retired, Rose laced a run-scoring double to left field to give the Pelicans the 1-0 advantage.

With the Birds leading 1-0 in the eighth inning, Higgins blasted his first home run since August 13, 2015 to extend the Pelicans’ lead to 2-0.

With the victory, Myrtle Beach shaved their magic number down to just two games with an opportunity to clinch at home on Wednesday. A Pelicans win and Buies Creek loss will hand Myrtle Beach the first half Southern Division crown.

The Pelicans’ 2-0 triumph was their 16th win in 20 games, including 11th in the last 12 contests. They are 11-1 to start the month of June.

Myrtle Beach will gun for the sweep of Frederick in Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. contest.
