Pelicans continue road tear with fourth straight victory

pel-29The Myrtle Beach Pelicans kept their road magic alive with a 7-5, come-from-behind win over the Salem Red Sox at Lewis-Gale Field on Friday night.

The heart of the order came through in a big way; Nick Williams walked four times, Jorge Alfaro doubled in a five run seventh to give the Pelicans the lead, and Joey Gallo hit another home run, his third in two days.  The Pelicans have won four consecutive contests and the road team has won all eight games that the team has played.

Chi Chi Gonzalez made the start for the Pelicans. After a perfect first, the right-hander out of Oral Roberts gave up three runs, two earned in the second inning to put the Pelicans (4-4) behind 3-0. After the third run scored, however, Gonzalez set down ten of the next eleven, including the final eight that he faced. In total, he went 5.1 innings, a season-high for a Pelicans pitcher. He allowed thee runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts. He was on the hook for the loss when he departed but did not take a decision.

Red Sox started Justin Haley kept the Birds off the scoreboard in the first three but walks hurt him in the fourth. Salem walked season-high seven batters on Friday night, and Haley walked two of the first three men up in the inning. After a Royce Bolinger single to load the bases, Preston Beck notched a two-run single to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Myrtle Beach offense exploded for five runs in the seventh inning, a season high. Against reliever Simon Mercedes, Edwin Garcia walked and came around to score to tie it on the first of two errors in the inning by Reed Gragnani. With two on, Alfaro doubled to center field to give the Pelicans their first lead at 5-3. Gallo followed with a line drive home run over the 20-foot wall in right field to extend the lead to 7-3.

Salem (6-2) threated in the ninth, plating two off of Sam Stafford who was otherwise very strong. The lefty tossed 2.2 scoreless, one hit innings before the ninth. Keone Kela closed the door, recording the final three outs for his second save. Stafford (1-0) picked up the win, and Mercedes (1-1) suffered the defeat.
