Pelicans continue to sizzle for seven-game win streak

pel-MartinezJonathan Martinez logged six innings of one-run ball and Charcer Burks slugged a two-run homer to earn the Myrtle Beach Pelicans their seventh straight victory, a 5-1 triumph over the Carolina Mudcats Friday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The seven-game winning streak is the Pelicans’ (61-51, 25-17) longest of the season. They’ve outscored their opponents 42-18 over that span.

Martinez (10-5) allowed only one run on four hits over his six innings, marking the ninth straight start in which he’s allowed three earned runs or less, and his 41st in his last 47. Friday’s victory sets a career-high for wins in a season for Martinez, and he becomes the third pitcher in the Carolina League to reach 10. Martinez also broke the Pelicans’ franchise record in career wins Friday, earning his 19th.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, Tyler Pearson singled to right against Mudcats (44-68, 15-27) starter Enderson Franco (5-9). The next batter was Burks, who crushed a two-run home run over the bleachers in left to give Myrtle Beach a 2-0 lead.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Carolina center fielder Keith Curcio singled with one out before Sal Giardina doubled him to third. After Tanner Murphy was hit by a pitch, J.B. Moss drove home Curcio with a sacrifice fly to left, cutting the Pelicans’ lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning, Bryant Flete started the frame with a single. After a balk and a ground out advanced Flete to third, Jeffrey Baez brought him in with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 3-1 Myrtle Beach.

With the score the same in the bottom of the sixth, Flete tripled to center before Ian Rice drove him in on a single to right to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the seventh, Andrew Ely led off the inning with a bunt single before Pearson advanced him to second on a bunt. Two batters later, Donnie Dewees knocked a base hit up the middle to push Ely across and make it 5-1.

Craig Brooks, Pedro Araujo and Tommy Thorpe each worked a scoreless inning of relief to seal the victory for Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans and Mudcats will meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
