Pelicans crumble late as Dash cuts division lead to one game

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, dropped the rubber match of a three game set with the Winston-Salem Dash Sunday, 8-2, in front of 4,084 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans (22-15) lead in the Carolina League Southern Division is down to one game over Winston-Salem (21-16) and three over the Carolina Mudcats (19-18).  The Pelicans travel to face the Mudcats next at 7:15 on Tuesday.

A pitcher’s duel went array in the ninth inning, when the Pelicans saw a 2-2 tie balloon away.  Against the usually sure-handed Matt West, the Winston-Salem offense picked up five consecutive one-out hits for a 6-2 lead.  The biggest blows were a Michael Early two-run double to break the deadlock and a Dan Black RBI triple.  The Black knock removed West from the game.

Inheriting a runner and a 6-2 game, reliever Francisco Mendoza coughed up a two-run home run to David Herbek, hit second of the game and third of the season.  The homer made it 8-2.  Mendoza has now allowed four inherited runners to score this season, all for West.

The Pelicans had a late lead in the game that they let slip away.  Up 2-1 in the eighth the Birds allow a run in the eighth inning.  Nick McBride, who tossed a great scoreless first three innings, gave up an RBI single to the league’s leader in RBI, Trayce Thompson.

Myrtle Beach took its first and only lead of the game in the seventh with an RBI single from Santiago Chirino.  The Beach had tied the game at one off starter Scott Snodgress with two singles by Tomas Telis and Christian Villanueva, a double steal and a throwing error by catcher Mike Blanke in the fourth.

On the mound the Pelicans got all they wanted from spot starter Kyle Devore.  The righty went in place of Kyle Hendricks in an effort to help limit the righty’s innings.  Devore went four, allowing one run on three hits.
