Pelicans drop 2nd straight on the road against Sox

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (50-36, 10-7), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, dropped their second straight game Tuesday, falling 8-6 against the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field. The Pelicans are 3-3 on the current road trip.

Left-hander Victor Payano (5-5) lasted just two innings and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits with three walks. Red Sox righty Heri Quevedo (2-3) took the win out of the bullpen for the Red Sox, firing 3.1 scoreless innings. Nate Striz got the final four outs and grabbed his sixth save.

Luis Sardinas was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Drew Robinson went 2-for-3 with two walks drawn. The Pelicans reached a double-digit hit total for a second straight night, pounding out 11 hits.

The Pelicans scored twice in the first inning but the Red Sox answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Trever Adams added an RBI groundout and Kellin Deglan had a two-out RBI single. Brandon Jacobs tied the game with a two-run single.

A Rougned Odor two-run double in the second inning gave the Pelicans a 4-2 lead. Payano surrendered three runs in the second inning and the Red Sox took a 5-4 lead after two innings.

Red Sox starter Mike Augliera did not make it past the second inning after being struck by a comebacker off the bat of Drew Robinson.

The Red Sox extended the lead to 8-4 before Robinson launched a two-run triple in the eighth inning.

Will Lamb tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Francisco Mendoza worked a perfect eighth inning.

The Pelicans continue their four-game series Wednesday with the Salem Red Sox. Right-hander  Luke Jackson (8-4, 2.48) will be opposed by Red Sox left-hander Henry Owens (6-4, 3.40). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 – Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans return to TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Friday, July 12, to take on the Winston-Salem Dash. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Slap Koozie. It will also be a “Fiesta Friday” presented by Abuelo’s. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST. Tickets are available for purchase online atwww.myrtlebeachpelicans.com   or by phone at 918-6000.
