Pelicans erase seven-run deficit to rally past P-Nats

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dug themselves a deep hole Sunday afternoon, but mustered the strength to climb out.

The Birds overcame an early 7-0 deficit to win 11-8 against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium, allowing Myrtle Beach (19-11) to maintain first place in the Carolina League’s Southern Division standings.

Trailing 7-0 in the third, with starter Luke Jackson already chased from the game, the Pelicans rallied to beat Potomac starter Adam Olbrychowski.  For the third time this season, the Pelicans put up a six spot in an inning.  Myrtle Beach used six singles and a Tomas Telis bases loaded double to undo the prior damage and pull within one.  Olbrychowski wound up allowing nine runs in four innings.

Still trailing 7-6 in the fourth the Pelicans began with Odubel Herrera and Hanser Alberto reaching on a walk and a single with one out.  That was followed by Brett Nicholas, who blasted his sixth homerun of the season to plate three and put Myrtle Beach ahead for the first time all series, 9-7.  Nicholas finished the game three-for-four and snapped his 0-10 stretch since coming back from an injured ankle.

Not done taking out two prior games of offensive frustration, the Pelicans scored again in the fourth on an RBI single from Teodoro Martinez.  The Birds added an insurance run on a Telis sac fly in the ninth.

On the mound the Pelicans bullpen, shorthanded with the recent promotion of Joe Van Meter and the presence of six starting pitchers, picked up 7 2/3 innings of work.  Francisco Mendoza allowed only one hit in 2 2/3 frames.  He earned the win with Jimmy Reyes allowing a run on three innings and Ben Rowen tossing two perfect for the save, his 10th.

For Potomac Jason Martinson was the star, blasting a grand slam in the first off Jackson and a solo homer off Reyes in the seventh.

Myrtle Beach now travels to Salem to take on the Red Sox for four, starting Monday at 7:05.
