Pelicans fall shy in Game 2, face final showdown tonight

pel-32Charcer Burks collected two hits, but Trey Ball and the Salem Red Sox pitching bounced the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-1 Thursday in Game 2 of the Southern Division Championship Series at LewisGale Field.

The Red Sox’ (1-1) win forces a winner-take-all Game 3 Friday night.

Ball (1-0) worked 5.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out three.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the second, Jayce Ray homered on the first pitch of the inning against Preston Morrison (0-1), giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Still up 1-0 in the third, Salem right fielder Joseph Monge singled to left before Luis Basabe moved him to third on a hit of his own. Rafael Devers then rolled a hit to right to score Monge and make it 2-0.

With the same score in the top of the fourth, Burks singled to right before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With one out, David Bote singled up the middle to score Burks and cut the Pelicans’ (1-1) deficit to 2-1.

With the same score in the bottom of the inning, Jose Sermo doubled to left before Jordan Procyshen bunted him to third. After Morrison struck out Deiner Lopez for the second out of the inning, the right-hander issued a wild pitch that allowed Sermo to score and extend the Red Sox lead to 3-1.

Still up two in the fifth, Salem got a single from Monge to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Devers delivered a two-run home run to right-center to open up a 5-1 lead for the Red Sox.

Mario Alcantara worked two shutout innings of relief for Salem to keep the score at 5-1 through eight.

With Myrtle Beach down 5-1 in the ninth, Jeffrey Baez walked ahead of an Andrew Ely single against Salem closer Jamie Callahan. After Daniel Spingola struck out, Bryant Flete singled to right to load the bases and bring Burks to the plate as the tying run. However, Burks flew out to right to end the game and even the series.

Daniel Lewis and James Norwood combined to work 3.1 scoreless innings of relief for Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans and Red Sox will begin the decisive Game 3 at 7:05 p.m. Friday. RHP Duane Underwood (0-0, 1.93) makes the start for Myrtle Beach, against LHP Matt Kent (10-7, 3.69) of Salem.
