Pelicans’ Gallo claims third player of the week award

pel-gallohomerMyrtle Beach Pelicans third baseman Joey Gallo was selected by the Carolina League as the Player of the Week for the week of May 12-18. It is his third such time receiving the honor after winning it for the opening week of the season and for the span of April 21-27.

Gallo, 20, led the Carolina League in nearly every offensive category including average (.529), on-base percentage (.714), and slugging (1.529), home runs (5), extra-base hits (7), and was second in RBI (8). He only struck out once during the last seven games while leading the league in walks (9). Three of Gallo’s five home runs came in an 11-5 win against the Potomac Nationals on Friday, May 16. It was his second three-homer game of the season and fourth such game in his professional career. He leads all of professional baseball with 18 home runs.

After Sunday’s game, Gallo is batting .342, good for second in the Carolina League, with league-best 18 home runs and 39 runs batted in. He also has the most runs scored (43) and walks (33) in the eight-team circuit. Gallo has played in all 42 of the Pelicans games this season and reached base safely in all but two of them. In addition to leading the minors in homers, he is fifth in RBI, tied for fourth in walks, fifth in on-base percentage (.460), second in slugging percentage (.795), and first in OPS (1.254).

Since the Pelicans become a Rangers affiliate in 2011, Gallo is the first Pelicans position player to win the award three times and only current Pelican Cody Buckel has also won a Carolina League weekly award three times, winning Pitcher of the Week three times in 2012. Gallo is the first Pelican to win the award on three occasions since Kala Ka’aihue did so over 2006 and 2007.

The Pelicans head to Frederick to begin a three-game series with the Keys on Tuesday, May 20th after a league-wide day off on Monday. They finished their most recent homestand 5-2, sweeping Winston-Salem and splitting the series 2-2 with Potomac.
