Pelicans limp into playoffs on heels of Mudcat sweep

The Pelicans’ offense struggled again at Carolina, and the Mudcats completed a four-game sweep of Myrtle Beach on Monday with a 3-1 win at Five County Stadium.

Pelicans (73-67, 30-40) starter Oscar De La Cruz (4-3) retired the first two batters of the bottom of the first inning before Monte Harrison and Weston Wilson notched back-to-back doubles to give the Mudcats (73-65, 37-33) a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Max McDowell popped a solo home run to widen the advantage to 2-0.

With one out in the third inning, Luis Aviles doubled before stealing third. Harrison then singled through a drawn-in infield to extend the margin to 3-0.

Carolina starter Kodi Medeiros (8-9) did not yield a run in six innings, scattering six hits and three walks while striking out four. Parker Berberet worked the final two frames for his first save.

With the score still 3-0 in the seventh, Trent Giambrone and Robert Garcia each notched singles to begin the frame. Two batters later, Zack Short walked before a P.J. Higgins sacrifice fly got the Birds on the board at 3-1.

With the loss, Myrtle Beach finished the second half at just 30-40, their worst half since going 26-44 (.371) in the first half of the 2010 season. This is the Birds’ worst half two since finishing 28-42 (.400) in 2009.

The Pelicans begin the best-of-five Southern Division Championship Series on Wednesday at the Down East Wood Ducks. First pitch times for Games 1 and 2 at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C., will be announced at a later date.

Myrtle Beach will host Game 3 on Friday, September 8 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. If necessary, Games 4 and 5 will also be played on the Grand Strand. Single-game playoff tickets and postseason packages are available on www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and by calling the Pelicans’ Box Office at (843) 918-6000.
