Pelicans outfielder Brown wins Carolina League honor

pel-brownIn conjunction with Minor League Baseball, the Carolina League announced its Players of the Week on Monday, naming Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Kevin Brown the winner for the week of May 25-31. The left-handed hitting Brown led the circuit with a .429 average (9-for-21), had the top slugging percentage of .810, and led the league with a 1.310 OPS across six games.

A 22nd-round selection by the Cubs in the 2013 Draft out of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island, the 24-year-old Brown also ranked in the top 10 in OPS among Class A-Advanced players during the week.

The Northborough, Mass., native ranked second in the league with a .500 on-base percentage while tying for the second-most hits and tying for the third most runs batted in with five.

In six games, evenly split between contests with the Carolina Mudcats and Potomac Nationals, Brown collected a double and a pair of triples from the left side of the plate, while also clubbing his first home run of the year in a road series opener at Potomac.

The honor is the first Offensive Player of the Week award for the Brown, who currently rides a six-game hitting streak. On Saturday, he tied a season high with three hits against Nationals pitchers.

The Pelicans had a player named Offensive Player of the Week six times last season (Joey Gallo, three times; Nick Williams, Jorge Alfaro, Ryan Cordell).

As a team, more Pelicans players have won weekly awards than any other Cubs affiliate. Brown is the second Pelicans player to win the hitter’s award this year, and sixth Cubs player to win a weekly award. Billy McKinney was named the Carolina League Offensive Player of the Week for May 4-10. For the most recent week, Yasiel Balaguert with Class-A South Bend was named Offensive Player of the Week in the Midwest League for May 25-31. Dan Vogelbach of the Double-A Tennessee Smokies has won Southern League Offensive Player of the Week twice this year for the weeks of April 9-19 and April 20-26, and Cael Brockmeyer won Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week for Opening Week (April 9-19). Pelicans starting pitcher Tyler Skulina won the team’s first Pitcher of the Week award for April 27-May 3.

Also honored this week was Salem Red Sox right-hander Teddy Stankiewicz, who earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.
