Pelicans pounded by Sox, hit the road for Potomac

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were routed by the Salem Red Sox 10-3 Sunday in the finale of their four-game set in front of 5,491 fans at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Chris Madera kicked off the ballgame for Salem (64-49, 24-20) with a triple to center field off Myrtle Beach (59-43, 16-27) starter Duncan Robinson (2-3) before scoring on a one-out single from Conrad Gregor. Gregor scored following a two-out double from Jose Sermo and Pelicans error, helping Salem jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Gregor continued his tear as he doubled to left field to begin the third inning. With two outs in the frame, Tate Matheny extended the Salem lead with a double of his own, plating Gregor to make the score 3-0.

With one out in the sixth, Austin Rei walked before advancing to second on a single from Victor Acosta. With two men retired, Chris Madera drew a walk to load the bases. Rei then scored on a wild pitch.

With the score 4-0, Gregor and Sermo drew back-to-back walks to begin the seventh. Gregor advanced to third base on a double play before scoring on a wild pitch to make the tally 5-0.

The big blow came in the eighth inning as the Red Sox doubled their lead. Rei kicked off the inning with a base hit before swiping second base. Acosta then drew a walk before Rei and Acosta advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Nick Lovullo singled to drive home both runners to stretch the lead to 7-0. An error prevented the Pelicans from recording the first out of the frame before Jeremy Rivera doubled home Lovullo. The final two runs of the frame score on a one-out double from Sermo, making things 10-0.

Myrtle Beach cracked the scorecard in the ninth. Vimael Machin and Eddy Martinez opened up the frame with back-to-back walks. Tyler Alamo singled to load the bases. With two outs in the frame, Zack Short , who reached base three times, drew a walk to bring home Machin, giving the Pelicans their first run of the contest. Two more runs scored in the frame on an error to make the tally 10-3. Marc Brakeman then entered the contest to record the final out of the game.

Logan Boyd (2-1) earned the win for Salem with six shutout innings.

Myrtle Beach has an off day Monday before kicking off a three-game set with Tuesday’s 7:05 p.m. contest at the Potomac Nationals.
