Pelicans rally to win behind Maloney’s game-winning hit

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (61-41, 21-12), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, came from behind Friday to claim a 4-3 win against the Wilmington BlueRocks at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans are now 3-3 on the seven-game road trip which comes to a close tomorrow.

With the scored tied 3-3 in the ninth inning, Joe Maloney lined an RBI single through the middle scoring Rougned Odor from second base with the go-ahead run. It was a comeback effort for the Pelicans, who trailed 2-0 entering the sixth inning.

Right-hander Ryan Harvey (7-1) took the win out of the bullpen, firing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Malcom Culver (4-4) allowed the eventual game-winning hit and was saddled with the loss.

Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth inning, the Pelicans struck for three runs in the inning. Edwin Garcia started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before the Birds tied the game on an RBI triple from Trever Adams. Adams would later score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Culver.

Victor Payano entered in the bottom of the sixth inning and surrendered a solo home run to Dennis Raben. That was the only run the lefty gave up over two innings of work.

Jerad Eickhoff started for the Pelicans and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over five innings. His counterpart, Kyle Smith, went 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits.

Odor scored two of the Pelicans four runs but failed to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

The Pelicans are 19-10 in one-run games this season.

The Pelicans and BlueRocks wrap up the four-game series Saturday at Frawley Stadium. Right-hander Luke Jackson (8-4, 2.39), the league’s ERA leader, will be opposed by righty J.C. Sulbaran (0-0, 9.00). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
