Pelicans ride Cantwell’s bat to sixth consecutive victory

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (57-38, 17-9) won their sixth straight contest Friday, overpowering the Wilmington Blue Rocks 10-6 at TicketReturn.com Field.

Patrick Cantwell paced the Pelicans, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Luis Sardinas went 3-for-5 with two runs knocked in. The Pelicans pounded out 14 total hits.

For the second time in the series, the Pelicans erased a 3-0 deficit to get a win. The Pelicans improved their league-leading home record to 35-13.

Paul Schwendel (2-1) earned the win for the Pelicans, tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Right-hander Leo Santiago (0-1) took the loss for the Blue Rocks, allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits over three innings. Victor Payano started for the Birds and allowed six earned runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings.

The Pelicans fell behind 3-0 in the first but scored two runs in the second and six runs in the fourth inning to build an 8-3 lead. In the fourth inning rally, the Pelicans sent 10 men to the plate. Jake Skole contributed to the rally with a two-run double and Sardinas added an RBI single.

The Blue Rocks scored three runs in the fifth inning and knocked Payano out of the game. Ryan Harvey got the final two outs in the fifth inning to preserve an 8-6 Pelicans lead. Will Lamb struck out four over two scoreless innings.

The Birds got two more runs in the sixth inning following a two-out error from Blue Rocks catcher Micah  Gibbs. With the bases loaded, Chris Grayson hit an infield fly that was dropped by Gibbs, allowing two runs to score.

The Pelicans and Blue Rocks wrap up the four-game series Saturday at TicketReturn.com Field. Right-hander Nick Martinez (7-6, 3.18) will oppose Blue Rocks left-hander John Lamb (4-8, 5.85). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans, 6-1 on the home stand, will try for the series sweep tomorrow.
