Pelicans spot Tseng three homers in win over P-Nats

pel-tsengBehind three home runs and seven strong innings from starter Jen-Ho Tseng, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans bested the Potomac Nationals 5-2 on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

Jacob Rogers, Kevin Brown, and Chensy Young all homered, and Tseng picked up his first win since May 25.

The Pelicans (50-39, 9-11 second half) scored the first five runs of the game. Against starter John Simms, Trey Martin drove in the first run of the game in the second on a bases loaded walk.

In the third inning, the Birds began the home run barrage. Jacob Rogers blasted a two-out solo home run to right field, and two batters later, and Victor Caratini reached on an error to extend the inning, Kevin Brown smashed a home run just inside the right field foul pole to put the Pelicans on top 4-0. It was the first time all season that the Pelicans knocked out two home runs in the same inning.

Simms, who had never allowed three homers in a game, gave up another home run to lead off the fifth. It came off the bat of Chesny Young, his first career home run in 127 professional games.

Simms (5-6) suffered the loss, finishing with six innings pitched and five runs allowed, three of which were earned. The five runs were more than enough for the Pelicans pitchers.

Tseng allowed four baserunners but kept the Nationals off the board in the first two innings. Over his next five frames, he allowed only four more.

Potomac (44-44, 11-7 second half) scored an unearned run against Tseng in the fifth on a pair of errors, and back-to-back hits against him to begin the seventh from Khayyan Norfork and Yimmy Yezzo plated the second and final run for Potomac.

Josh Conway and Fernando Cruz both fired perfect innings to close out the win.
