Pelicans still looking for elusive first win of season

pel-3The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were swept by the Salem Red Sox in a 3-0 game on Sunday afternoon at Pelicans Ballpark. In his first professional start, Pelicans right-hander Sam Wolff took a perfect game into the fifth inning but ultimately took the loss.

Wolff dazzled in his Pelicans debut. The Rapid City, South Dakota native set down the first 12 batters faced, including six on strikes. The first batter to reach against him was Salem’s cleanup man Matt Gedman who doubled to leadoff the fifth. Gedman later scored in the inning on a wild pitch to give Salem (4-0), a 1-0 lead that they would not surrender.  Wolff (0-1) took the loss, allowing the one run on one hit and a walk.

The Pelicans (0-4) loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but after a pitching change, Salem induced a Jorge Alfaro groundout to end the threat. The Pelicans put men at the corners in the seventh and two more on in the ninth but never scored. The team left on 11 in total, a season-high, and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Salem added a pair of insurance runs off of Ryan Harvey in the seventh to take the series finale by a 3-0 score.

Pitching in relief of starter Corey Littrell, Simon Mercedes (1-0) earned the win, going 3.1 innings of shutout relief with six strikeouts; he surrendered just three hits.

Myrtle Beach was shut out for the second time in the series and has yet to lead in an inning this season.

Playing left field, Odubel Herrera went 4-for-4 with a walk in the losing effort, making his first career start in the outfield.

The Pelicans hit the road tomorrow and travel to Wilmington, Delaware for their first road tilt of the season on Tuesday night against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. In a battle of left-handers, Luis Parra (0-0, 0.00) makes his second appearance and first start of the year opposing highly touted Royals prospect Sean Manaea.

The next Pelicans home game is Tuesday, April 15 when they play host to the Potomac Nationals for the beginning of a seven-game homestand.
