Pelicans take road series, return for homestand

pel-20Rashad Crawford lashed a three-run home run and Jonathan Martinez matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in five solid innings as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans rolled 5-1 over the Wilmington Blue Rocks Monday to take the four-game series at Frawley Stadium.

With the score tied at one, Wilmington (33-55, 6-13) starter Josh Staumont (2-10) walked both Andrew Ely and Erick Castillo to begin the fourth. After Charcer Burks popped out, Crawford banged a three-run dinger to put the Pelicans (46-43, 10-9) ahead 4-1.

Staumont walked a career-high nine batters in 3.2 frames, with 14 of the 25 Birds to bat against him reaching. The righty surrendered four runs on five hits while fanning four. All nine Pelicans reached at least once in the effort.

That was more than Martinez (6-5) needed. The right-hander allowed a run on four hits in five innings, matching a career-high with eight strikeouts while walking just one. Monday was his fifth straight start in which he allowed two runs or fewer.

With the score still 4-1 in the sixth, Crawford reached on catcher’s interference before stealing second base. Gleyber Torres then smashed a double to score Crawford and increase the lead to 5-1.

Jordan Minch, Pedro Araujo and Ryan McNeil combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, locking down the win. Araujo fanned four in 2.2 scoreless while McNeil struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Samir Duenez homered in the first for Wilmington to strike first at 1-0.

However, Myrtle Beach immediately was able to respond. David Bote walked to begin the second. Two batters later, Andrew Ely did the same. Two batters after that, Burks lined a base hit to left to knot the score at one.

With the victory, the Pelicans won their first series since sweeping Potomac from June 4-7. The seven-set drought without a series win was their longest since 2010.

After an off day Tuesday, Myrtle Beach begins a three-game series with Frederick at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
