Pelicans use pitching, timely hitting to edge past P-Nats

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (43-30, 3-1), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, won their second straight one-run game Monday, edging the Potomac Nationals 3-2 at Pfitzner Stadium. The Pelicans are 3-1 on the opening road trip of the second half.

Nick Martinez (6-4) started and went six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Jon Edwards struck out five over the final three innings to earn his third save. At one point, Martinez and Edwards combined to strike out seven straight P-Nats between the fifth and seventh innings. Martinez struck out the side in his final inning.

Right-hander A.J. Cole (4-3) went six innings for the P-Nats, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts.

A Rougned Odor RBI single broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning as the Pelicans held on for the win. Odor finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The Nationals did not plate a run after the fourth inning.

The Pelicans jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Odor started a two-out rally with a double in the first inning and scored on a Trever Adams RBI single. Jake Skole clubbed his second home run of the year, a solo blast in the third inning, giving the Pelicans a 2-0 lead.

A Cole Leonida solo home run in the third cut the Pelicans lead to 2-1. Kevin Keyes tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth inning.

Patrick Cantwell made a great defensive play with one out in the ninth inning. After Edwards struck out Adrian Nieto, the ball bounced away from Cantwell. He tracked it down nearly halfway up the first base line and made a falling, off balance feed to Adams at first.

The Pelicans continue a four-game series Tuesday with the Potomac Nationals in Woodbridge, Va. All-star right-hander Alec Asher (4-4, 3.26) will be opposed by right-hander Blake Schwartz (5-2, 2.47). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 – Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.
