Pelicans work 11 innings to earn 10th straight home win

Edwin Garcia laced a pinch-hit, RBI infield single in the 11th inning Tuesday, propelling the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (28-16) to a 3-2 extra-inning win against the Carolina Mudcats (15-29) at TicketReturn.com Field.

The Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, have now won 10 in a row at home and are a league-leading 17-4 at home. They remain 5.5 games up in the Southern Division heading into play Wednesday.

After Kellin Deglan’s opposite field, leadoff double in the 11th inning, the Pelicans loaded the bases with nobody out following a sacrifice bunt from Royce Bolinger and an intentional walk to Chris Grayson. Jake Skole pinch ran for Deglan and scored the winning run on Garcia’s game-winning hit – a ground ball to the second baseman, Joey Wendle. After a diving stop, he got to his feet and fired the ball home, much too late to get Skole.

The Pelicans earned their fourth walk-off win of the season and have won all four of their extra-inning contests this season.

Ryan Harvey (4-0) earned the win for the Pelicans, allowing two hits over a scoreless inning. The Mudcats had runners on the corners in the top of the 11th, but Harvey got Bo Greenwell to hit into an inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play. J.R. Reichenbach (1-2) allowed the game-winning run in the 11th and was saddled with the loss.
The Pelicans twice lead early in the game. A Trever Adams sacrifice fly in the first gave the Birds the early lead. Kevin Torres added an RBI infield single in the fourth inning to give the Birds a 2-1 advantage. Tyler Naquin’s RBI single in the fifth tied the game – it would stay knotted at two until the final play.

Left-hander Victor Payano started for Myrtle Beach and took a no decision, allowing two earned runs on three hits over five innings. His counterpart, Jacob Lee, also got a no decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits over 4.2 innings.

Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas turned a nice double play to end the third. Odor ranged to his left to field and then threw low to second base. Sardinas picked the one-hop throw and completed the twin-killing.
