Pineda’s homer helps Lady Chants take series from G-W

Chelsea Pineda hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored Tamara Hawkins to help lift Coastal over Gardner-Webb on Sunday for the 3-1 win. Coastal went two-for-three in the weekend series against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The Chanticleers are 29-11 overall and 6-2 in the Big South following the victory.

Coastal went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning with one out when Sarah Maples scored on a single to right field by Kiana Quolas. The Chanticleers threatened to score again in the inning as Kory Hayden advanced to third on Quolas’ hit, but Gardner-Webb picked up the second and third out during the Chants next at bat.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the second, as Morgan Baker advanced home on a double to left field by Savannah Burns with no outs. Burns moved to third during Kellie Beres at bat, but the Chanticleers picked up three straight outs to take the game to the bottom of the inning.

Coastal had several different chances to take the lead again over the next four innings, but came up empty handed. The Runnin’ Bulldogs had an opportunity to score in the third inning, but the Chants defense kept Gardner-Webb from earning its second run of the game.

During the bottom of the sixth inning Cacia Pierre hit a single. Hawkins who pinch ran for Pierre advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Rasley. Pineda then hit her seventh home run of the season to center field on a one-one count to put the Chanticleers ahead 3-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Coastal picked up three straight outs against the Runnin’ Bulldogs to close out the game and take the 3-1 win.

Pineda ended the game with one hit, two RBI and one run in one at bat, while being walked once. Maples finished the day with one hit and one run in three at bats and was walked once. Quolas posted one hit and one RBI in three at bats. Hayden recorded two hits in two at bats, as well as four assists. Rasley tallied seven putouts on the afternoon.

Quolas earned the win for Coastal from the rubber after pitching three innings, in which she allowed only two hits in 11 batters faced, while not allowing a walk.

Cindy Boomhower recorded the loss for Coastal after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and one walk in 12 batters faced.

Coastal returns to the road in its next game, as the Chanticleers travel to Radford, Va. to play Big South opponent Radford in a three game series beginning on Friday, April 6 with a doubleheader. The first game on Friday is set to start at 4 p.m. The three game series will conclude on Saturday, April 7 with the final game slated to begin at 1 p.m.
