Playoff Hoops: SJ boys top Aiken; Lady Braves ousted

sjhoops-2The St. James boys basketball team proved it wasn’t satisfied with simply making the playoffs. The second-seeded Sharks (17-5) are hungrier for more.

St. James scored a convincing 67-51 victory over visiting Aiken in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on Tuesday night, giving a packed house at the Shark Tank its first postseason home victory.

Jackson Hurston scored a game-high 21 points, Zach Werba added 19 points and Haywood Brandon tallied 15 as St. James advanced to the second round of the playoffs. The Sharks (17-5) will travel to top-seeded Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Friday.

* Midland Valley 70, North Myrtle Beach 47: The shorthanded Chiefs were eliminated in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs with a loss at top-seeded Midland Valley.

Playing without starters Doodle Hill and Matthew Stanaland, the fourth-seeded Chiefs struggled throughout the first half to trail 37-19 at the intermission.

The Chiefs were forced to rely on an unusual starting lineup that saw three JV players come off the bench as the first substitutions of the game.

* Airport 71, Myrtle Beach 65: The third-seeded Seahawks’ season came to an end with a first-round loss to the second-seeded Eagles.

Malik Waring scored 20 points and Will Gray added 18 but Myrtle Beach couldn’t come away with a win on the road.

GIRLS

* White Knoll 40, Socastee 37: The Lady Braves battled back from an early deficit but saw their season came to an end in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

After falling behind 19-5 in the first period, Socastee gradually got back in the ballgame before running out of time. Mia Angelo scored 20 points and Kira Bell added nine.
