Prep Football Picks: MB-CF opponents of polar opposites

For Grand Strand football fans who thought Myrtle Beach was all gimicky offense and no bite, the Seahawks have shown their overall team toughness already this season.

Defense and special teams have risen up to get the Seahaws off to a 3-0 start. In fact, 21 of Myrtle Beach’s 27 points came via two fumble recoveries for touchdowns and nine points off the foot of kicker Max Huggins.

The opposite has been true for Carolina Forest, whose offense has put up points but has a defense that is allowing almost 40 points per game. The Panthers get a lesson in becoming a complete team by the Seahawks. … Myrtle Beach 34, Carolina Forest 17.

* Socastee at Lake View: So what in the world is a Myrtle Beach-area, Class AAA program doing driving an hour out in the wilds of Dillon County to face the Class A Wild Gators?

That’s because Braves coach Tim Renfrow was an all-state player at Lake View back in 19-mumbley-mumble, and he will be honored by his alma mater at the game. But the biggest award will be a 5-0 start for the Braves. … Socastee 38, Lake View 20.

* Marlboro County at Conway: The Tigers may be in no shape (mentally or physically) to face the bad boys from Bennettsville one week after a hard-fought loss to Socastee.

The Bulldogs have been licking their chops for a rematch after Conway’s blowout win last year. … Marlboro County 35, Conway 23.

* Mullins at North Myrtle Beach: The 2-1 Chiefs used a bye week to come back to earth after winning more games in August than it had in more than two years. The Chiefs make it 3-1 against the Auctioneers. … North Myrtle Beach 27, Mullins 12.

* Cross at St. James: The Sharks also got a bye week to work out some of the kinks of a 1-2 start, and they will get to put them to the test against Cross. … St. James 24, Cross 17.

Last week: 2-1; Ocerall 11-4.
