Prep Football Picks: Seahawks face short week, tough foe

The Myrtle Beach High football team barely had time to celebrate their late comeback victory over Irmo on Saturday before turning their attention to the next big game on the schedule – West Florence.

The Seahawks travel to Flo Town for Thursday’s showdown with the Class AAAA power, which gave Myrtle Beach all it wanted last year at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. This time the Seahawks are in Florence on short rest.

But if Myrtle Beach proved anything in last weekend’s 33-37 win, it’s that they are reslient. Trailing 27-12, the Seahawks showed they can make the plays when they have to be made to get the win, and that’s a key quality for a championship team.

Look for Myrtle Beach to struggle with the Knights but pull out another victory in the end. … Myrtle Beach 31, West Florence 27.

* Carolina Forest at St. James: This Horry County matchup could be a lot closer than last year’s 49-22 win by the Panthers.

Since that meeting, St. James has improved while Carolina Forest’s defense has gone AWOL. The Panthers have given up 45 points per game in their two losses so far this season.

The Sharks defense is allowing only 7.5 points per game, so this one could be closer than expected. … Carolina Forest 27, St. James 24.

* Rock Hill at Conway: After getting a heaping helping of Upstate football in Saturday’s 55-19 loss to Northwestern, the Tigers come back for seconds Friday night against Rock Hill.

The Tigers were simply outmanned against the Trojans in the Kickoff Classic, and could be in for more of the same against Rock Hill.

Conway’s only chance lies in the feet and arm of quarterback Mykal Moody, who played well before being forced out of last week’s game. He needs to have a monster night for the Tigers to prevail. … Rock Hill 28, Conway 20.

* West Brunswick at North Myrtle Beach: The Chiefs looked like a new team for the first 1 1/2 games of the season. But last Saturday, it seemed like the old Chiefs came out of the locker room.

Making mistakes that resembled the team that lost 22 games in a row over the past 2 1/2 year, the Chiefs committed five of their six turnovers in the second half.

North Myrtle Beach needs to square those miscues away before facing a tough West Brunswick team that took Socastee to the wall last weekend. … West Brunswick 34, North Myrtle Beach 20.

* Lake City at Socastee: The Braves are 2-0 and on a roll, but they face a tough challenge from an athletic Lake City team that has the speed to stop Socastee’s triple-option attack.

West Brunswick showed how to stop the Braves last weekend, holding Socastee to one touchdown over the final 2 1/2 quarters. I’m sure Lake City has seen the film.

But these Braves are much tougher than previous teams and should have the ability to go toe to toe with the Panthers. Socastee lost four games by less than a touchdown last year, and now they’re showing they know how to win the close ones. … Socastee 33, Lake City 30.

Last week: 4-2; Overall 6-4.
