Red-hot Pelicans continue run for eighth straight win

pel-pitchIn his return to the lineup from Triple-A Iowa, Cael Brockmeyer hit a grand slam and collected a career-high five RBI to lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to their eighth consecutive victory on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The 12-0 win over the Salem Red Sox tied a season-high for the club’s largest margin of victory and completed a three-game series sweep.

After a perfect first inning by Pelicans starter Jen-Ho Tseng, Chesny Young opened the Pelicans first with a single to extend his on-base streak to 40 consecutive games. On the strength of six singles, a sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded walk, and a throwing error on a fielder’s choice, the Pelicans (56-39, 15-11 second half) posted a 5-0 lead after the first inning of play.

Red Sox starting pitcher Kevin McAvoy would slow the bleeding until the fourth inning. The Pelicans loaded the bases with two outs before Cael Brockmeyer launched his first career grand slam over the left-center field fence to extend the Pelicans’ lead to 9-0.

Salem (49-47, 11-15 second half) was shut out in the contest for the second time in the series, and the Birds outscored the Sox 20-1 in the three-game set.

Myrtle Beach tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning with run-scoring doubles from Victor Caratini and Kevin Brown before Carlos Penalver knocked in the twelfth run of the game on a fielder’s choice ground out.

Tseng pitched into the sixth inning but walked the first two batters before being replaced by James Pugliese. The right-hander worked out of the inning two ground outs, including one double play, and he finished his night with three innings of scoreless relief. Jasvir Rakkar, fresh off of a gold medal victory with Team Canada in the Pan American Games on Sunday, rejoined the team Tuesday and pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out the final batter of the game to seal the 12-0 win.

Young, who broke the Carolina League consecutive on-base record on Sunday, tallied a pair of hits on Tuesday for his 27th multi-hit game with the Pelicans and, in addition to extending the on-base streak, advanced his hit streak to ten straight games.
