Region 6-4A Recap: Braves duel past Knights in 2 OTs

socfoot-23stiffarmThe Socastee High football team had to work double overtime to score a huge Region 6-4A victory over visiting West Florence on Friday night.

Socastee fullback Angelo Sauter powered his way into the end zone in the second overtime period for the game-winning touchdown for the Braves (7-2 overall, 2-1 region), who saw a 14-point lead in the second half slip away before holding on to win.

After a scoreless first half, the Braves took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field for a 6-minute drive that was capped by Buck Bacot’s 1-yard TD plunge. Sam McKinney followed with his second of three interceptions of the night to set up another Socastee TD and the Braves appeared in control with a 14-0 lead late in the third.

But West Florence quarterback Bowman Hiller threw late touchdown passes to Ikeem White and Kyre Graham, the second coming with just 2 minutes remaining to tie the game at 14-all. The Braves were able to drive the ball into Knights’ territory but not close enough to attempt a potential game-ending field goal.

Both teams scored on their first overtime possession, with Sauter doing the honors from 1-yard out, but the Braves forced the Knights to settle for a field goal in the second overtime. That set the table for Sauter’s game-winner to improve Socastee’s playoff standing. The Braves welcome No. 2 ranked South Florence next weekend with first place in the region on the line.

Socastee inductees four new members to the school’s athletics hall of fame at halftime. Longtime boys basketball coach and first-year Marshall University coach Dan D’Antoni, former Socastee and Georgetown University basketball player Courtland Freeman, ex-South Carolina softball standout Beth Hunt and longtime multi-sport coach Fred Kroll were honored at the game.

* Sumter 63, Carolina Forest 41: The Gamecocks got a record-breaking performance from multi-talented athlete Kyjon Tyler, who accounted for 485 total yards and six touchdowns against the Panthers.

Tyler had only three rushes and scored TDs on each one for a total of 162 yards, and an average of 54 yards per carry. He also had a pair of TD catches and scored on a kick return to single-handedly lead the Gamecocks offensive attack.

* South Florence 41, Conway 0: The Tigers (2-7, 1-2) were shut out by the visiting Bruins, who used a pair of interceptions returns for touchdowns to roll to the victory.

South Florence quarterback Nick Jones also threw for a pair of touchdowns and Rodney Brunson scored on a 1-yard dive. Evan Rabon added a pair of field goals to account for all the scoring.
