Region 7-3A: MB flies high; Sharks rally for playoff bid

mbfoot-9A mysterious drone hovered over the North Myrtle Beach’s football stadium Friday night. It turned out to be the second most impressive aerial performance of the evening.

Myrtle Beach High senior quarterback Drayton Arnold completed 19 of 25 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns – all to different receivers – as the Seahawks (7-3 overall, 5-0 Region 7-3A) completed a region sweep with a 35-28 win over the rival Chiefs (5-5, 2-3).

Myrtle Beach carries the top seed into the first round of the Class 3A playoffs on Nov. 13, while North Myrtle Beach settled for the No. 4 playoff seed thanks to victories by St. James and Georgetown. The Chiefs will likely earn the at-large spot to play at top-seeded Hartsville on Nov. 13.

After North Myrtle Beach running back Kered Class, who finished with 223 yards on 15 carries, scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on a 16-yard run to open the scoring, the Seahawks rattled off three unanswered TDs in the second quarter. Arnold hit Keyonte Sessions, Elijah Rice and Will Vereen for TDs for a 21-7 halftime lead.

Class scored on TD runs of 31 and 89 yards, but Arnold found his fourth TD target of the night to Cortez Brown. Myrtle Beach running back Brandon Sinclair added a short TD run for a 35-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Myrtle Beach defense forced its third turnover of the game to end a late comeback bid by the Chiefs. NMB quarterback Ronnie Bass threw a TD pass on the final play of the game to account for the final margin.

* St. James 16, Lake City 14: The Sharks (6-4, 3-2) secured a playoff bid and clinched their first winning season in school history with a comeback victory over host Lake City.

St. James outscored the Panthers 13-2 in the second half to wrap up the No. 3 seed in Region 7-3A. They will face a team to be determined in the first round on Nov. 13.

The Sharks trailed 12-3 at halftime, scoring only on a 52-yard field goal by Charles Ouverson. They cut the deficit to 12-9 on a big fourth-and-goal play by Zach Werba with a 3-yard TD. Jay-Mion Pressley scored the game-winner on a short TD dive as the Sharks yielded only a safety in the second half.
