Region titles, playoff spots up for grabs in final week

The Region VIII-AAA boys and girls basketball championships and playoff spots are coming down to the final games this week.

The first-place St. James boys and girls’ fates will go a long way toward being determined Tuesday night when they travel to Wilson.

The Sharks (11-8 overall, 6-2 region) are tied for first with Wilson. They can wrap up the title by sweeping the season series against the Tigers tonight and holding off rival Socastee at home on Thursday. The Lady Sharks (18-4, 7-1), who hold a one-game lead over Myrtle Beach, can do the same by winning out or a loss by the Lady Seahawks.

Myrtle Beach’s boys and girls also have outside shots at claiming the region title by winning out against Georgetown and North Myrtle Beach and getting some help from the leaders. The Seahawks (11-11, 5-3) are one game behind St. James and Wilson and needs the winner of Tuesday’s game to lose on Thursday to force a playoff for the region title.

The Lady Seahawks (18-4, 6-2), who have won the past six region titles, need the Lady Sharks to lose one of their next two games to force a one-game playoff since the two teams split the season series.

North Myrtle Beach and Socastee meet Tuesday night with serious playoff implications at stake. The Braves (11-8, 3-5) and Chiefs (11-9, 2-6) are in a battle for the fourth and final playoff spot, with Tuesday’s winner gaining the inside track for the postseason spot.

The Lady Chiefs (14-7, 5-3) can clinch at least the fourth and final playoff spot but can improve their positioning by beating the Lady Braves (11-10, 3-5) coupled with losses by St. James or Myrtle Beach, whom they meet on Thursday. Socastee also can lock up a playoff spot with a win Tuesday or on Thursday against rival St. James.

The Region VI-AAAA boys title also is coming down to the final week with Carolina Forest (15-6, 5-2) currently alone in first place by a half-game over South Florence. The Panthers need to beat Conway on Friday and have the Bruins get beat in one of their two games this week to win the crown outright.

Ties for position in the region standings result in a one-game playoff between the two teams. The playoffs for all classes get under way next week.

One response to “Region titles, playoff spots up for grabs in final week”

  1. NMBHeelsFan says:

Just to clarify, I am pretty certain that the tie-breaker games only take place if the teams have the same quality points for their wins. Quality points are determined by the rank of teams you have beaten. For example, a win over the 1st place team is worth 6 points; a win over the 2nd place team would be 5 points; etc.

The tie-breaker game only comes in to play if the quality points are equal.
