Reloaded Chants in Top 25 of preseason baseball poll

ccubase-celebThe Coastal Carolina baseball program was picked 24th in the D1Baseball.com Preseason Top 25, it was announced today.

Joining Coastal Carolina in the D1Baseball.com Preseason Top 25 are 2016 Chanticleers opponents #10 North Carolina State (CCU hosts Feb. 20), #13 and defending national champion Virginia (CCU hosts Feb. 21), #16 North Carolina (hosts CCU April 19) and #17 South Carolina (hosts CCU April 5).

The Chanticleers were 39-21 last season and made its 13th NCAA appearance since 2001, playing in the Texas A&M Regional. In addition to preseason #24 Coastal Carolina, that Regional featured Texas A&M (#4 in the 2016 preseason) and California (#9 in 2016 preseason).

Coastal returns nine starters on offense, including preseason All-American shortstop Michael Paez, two-time All-Big South selection Connor Owings and All-Big South outfielder Anthony Marks. Also back are catcher David Parrett (10 HR in 2015), first baseman Tyler Chadwick (career .304 batting average), second baseman Seth Lancaster (32 games/16 starts), third baseman Zach Remillard (team-best 95 career RBI) and designated hitter G.K. Young (batted .301 last season and had 70 RBI in two seasons with the Chants).

Dalton Ewing, who only played four games last season before suffering a season-ending injury as a freshman, will hold down the right field spot while fellow sophomores Josh Crump (45 games/13 starts), Billy Cooke (25 games/10 starts), Kevin Woodall Jr. (29 games/3 starts) and Matt Beaird (22 games/7 starts) will give Coastal many options.

The pitching staff features Alex Cunningham, who was 6-0 last season, and Bobby Holmes, a Freshman All-American and the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year. Also back on the mound are mainstays Andrew Beckwith, Tyler Poole, Mike Morrison and Patrick Corbett, who missed both 2014 and 2015 due to injury. The starting rotation will be bolstered by sophomore Zach Hopeck, transfer Adam Hall (Xavier), junior college transfer Steven D’Amico (Metro CC-Maple Woods) and freshman Jason Bilous.
