Remillard leads Chants to first series win of season

ccubase-remillardZach Remillard had a career-high four hits and Riley Norton drove in three to lead Coastal Carolina to an 8-2 win over Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon at Pelicans Ballpark.

With the win, Coastal improves to 12-16, 4-5 in the Big South and takes two-of-three versus the Buccaneers (16-14, 2-7) to win the conference series.

Remillard was 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored while Norton, who entered with one hit and one RBI for the season, accounted for five of CCU’s eight runs by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Steven Whitaker added two hits and two RBI.

Charleston Southern jumped out to an early 1-0 in the top of the first. Bobby Ison reached on a two-out single, stole second and scored on Chase Shelton’s RBI single.

Coastal answered with two runs in the second inning. Colin Hering reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Norton’s single. Norton took second on the attempted play at the plate and later scored on Whitaker’s RBI single.

Charleston Southern threatened in the top of the third. With two on and two out, Andrew Widell lined a ball to right center field. However, Hering made highlight-reel, diving catch for the third out and keep the score 2-0.

The Chants then used consecutive hits by Remillard, Connor Owings and Kyle Jackson in the home half of the third to go up 3-1. Two batters later Norton plated Jackson with an RBI single and Hering, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Nick Oberg to give Coastal a 5-1 advantage.

Coastal added to its lead in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Norton reached on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball. Oberg’s ground out allowed Norton to take third and Steven Whitaker brought Norton home with an RBI ground out.

In the top of the seventh inning, Alex Tomasovich hit a leadoff double, extending his active hit streak to a nation’s best 23 games. Tomasovich moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Ison’s sacrifice fly to center to make the score 6-2.

Coastal added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to provide the eventual 8-2 final. Remillard singled and Anthony Marks walked. Hering lined a single back up the middle to drive in Remillard and move to Marks to third. Norton walked and a wild pitch on ball four allowed Marks to score.

Seth Lamando improved to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore pitched six-plus innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs. He only walked one while striking out four. Andrew Tomasovich (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks in his 5.0 innings.

Coastal Carolina will return to action Tuesday (April 1) to host The Citadel at 6 pm. That contest will be the Chanticleers’ last home game until April 17, playing nine straight road games from April 2-15.
