Renfrow to miss four to six weeks after injuring hand

clemfoot-renfroworangeSocastee High alum and Clemson starting wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will miss “a few weeks,” according to Tigers coach Dabo Swinney, after suffering a broken hand in Saturday’s 30-24 win over Troy.

Renfrow sustained the injury while making a diving 35-yard touchdown reception. He returned to the game in limited action but did not make another catch. Preliminary reports on Saturday indicated it was not a serious injury.

“We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb,” said Swinney on his Monday night radio show, Tiger Calls.  “He could play with it, but the injury would make it more difficult to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to repair it and miss a few weeks.  We hope to have him back for the (Oct. 15) NC State game, but certainly by the (Oct. 29) Florida State game after the open date.”

Renfrow was one of Clemson’s top players in the school’s run to the National Championship game last year. He had 33 receptions for 492 yards and five touchdowns in 2015. The original walk-on had seven receptions for 88 yards and two scores against Alabama.

Renfrow has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of the last four games. He has four receptions for 62 yards and two scores in two games so far this year.

Ray Ray McCloud is expected to move into the starting lineup with Renfrow’s injury. McCloud is coming off a game in which he had seven receptions for a career high 86 yards.
