Renfrow’s highlight-reel TD helps Tigers hold off Troy

clemfoot-13diveIt wasn’t pretty, but it was a win for No. 2 Clemson on Saturday. And the prettiest play of the day came from an increasingly familiar source in former Socastee High standout Hunter Renfrow.

Playing host to Troy, the Tigers (2-0) narrowly escaped a scare from the Trojans, 30-24. Clemson recovered a onside kick attempt by the Trojans in the final seconds to seal the win.

Clemson sophomore wide receiver Hunter Renfrow once again turned in the play of the game. He made a diving catch in the end zone on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson and appeared to be shaken up on the highlight play.

It was Renfrow’s only catch of the game, but it came in a timely manner. Just as in week one when Renfrow caught the game-winning touchdown for Clemson from Watson in a close 19-13 victory. For the season, Renfrow has four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

Watson finished the game with 292 yards passing and three touchdowns. He led the team in rushing with 10 carries for 55 yards. Troy was able to amass 386 yards of offense to Clemson’s 414. Both teams finished the game with three turnovers.

Clemson was led in receiving by Ray-Ray McCloud with seven receptions for 86 yards. Artavis Scott added seven catches for 71 yards.

Up next for Clemson is non-conference state rival South Carolina State at noon next Saturday from the MEAC Conference. Junior wide receiver Mykal Moody, who played quarterback at Conway High School, plays for SCSU to set up a Grand Strand matchup with Renfrow at receiver.
