Report: Gamecocks to hire Kansas State coach Martin

In hopes of contending with the (Kentucky) Wildcats, South Carolina has decided to hire a Wildcat in the form of Kansas State coach Frank Martin, who is expected to be named the Gamecocks’ next basketball coach, according to a report on GoSportsTalkLive.com.

The fifth-year K-State coach has made a name for himself with both his bombastic attitude and ability to turn an also-ran into a winner. The Wildcats have made the NCAA Tournament in four of his five seasons in Manhattan, Kansas, going 117-54 in the tough Big 12 Conference. The Wildcats made the NIT in the other season.

The report said USC athletic director Eric Hyman chose Martin over current Minnesota coach and former Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, who previously served as an assistant for the Gamecocks. Hyman has requested permission to speak to Martin, who is expected to be introduced as the new Gamecocks’ coach this week.

The report also said the USC Board of Trustees has called a meeting for Tuesday to discuss a “contractual matter,” which is believed to be the approval of a lucrative deal for Martin. He was earning $1.1 million per year at K-State, while USC is expected to offer a multi-year deal worth $1.6 to $1.7 million per season.

Martin, who made a in-studio appearance for CBS’ NCAA Tournament coverage over the weekend, served as an assistant under then-Cincinnati head coach Bob Huggins before spending five seasons at Northeastern and five more at K-State. He was a high successful high school coach in South Florida before joining the college ranks.
