Report: Sessions turns down Lakers to become free agent

Former Myrtle Beach High star Ramon Sessions has decided not exercise his player option to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers and will become a free agent for the upcoming season, according to a report in the L.A. Times.

Sessions, who would have earned $4.55 million next season had he opted to re-sign with the Lakers, instead chose to test the free-agent market entering his fifth year in the NBA.

There’s still a chance that Sessions will return to the Lakers by signing a free-agent contract, but his agent, Jared Karnes, told the Times that his client “decided to do what was best in providing stability and longevity for him in the NBA, and this could only be achieved through a multi-year contract.”

Sessions, 26, was acquired by the Lakers from the Cleveland Cavaliers before the trade deadline. He started off well with the Lakers, averaging 13.7 points and seven assists as a starter in 23 regular-season games.

But Sessions was roundly criticized for his play in the postseason, particularly in playing poor defense against Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrooks. Sessions averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per playoff game.

Sessions had until Wednesday to make his decision between declaring free agency or exercising his option. The free agent signing period officially begins June 30.
