Sharks hope Price is right coach for football program

priceThe St. James High football team is bringing in a proven winner to try to turn the program’s fortunes around, reportedly hiring former Wallace-Rose Hill (NC) and South Columbus (NC) coach Joey Price to lead the Sharks.

St. James is set to announce the hiring of Price, who stepped down at Wallace-Rose Hill two weeks ago. Price leaves the school with five Class A state championships to his credit. He departs with a string of three straight state titles.

“I am excited about Coach Joey Price joining the Sharks coaching staff and leading our football program,” said St. James athletics director Paula Lee. “His energy level, knowledge and experience in building football programs and winning traditions is something to look forward to in the St. James community.”

Grand Strand football fans may remember Price from his playing days at North Myrtle Beach, where he graduated in 1976, and his earlier coaching days at South Columbus High, just over the border in Tabor City, NC. He went 131-27 in his 12-year tenure with the Stallions before leaving for Wallace-Rose Hill, where he went 107-15 in eight season.

Price now heads south of the state line to tackle a program mired in mediocrity for most of its 12-year existence. St. James went 7-5 in 2014 and won its first-ever playoff game under coach Robbie Brown, but the Sharks have nose-dived since reaching those school-best achievements. St. James went winless last season and Brown stepped down after three seasons at the helm.
