Rivals meet in cross country before region championship

The Myrtle Beach boys and girls cross country teams swept defeated North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday in a tuneup for next Tuesday’s region championship meet.

Myrtle Beach’s Ethan Epstein turned in a first-place time of 17:14 to lead the Seahawks to a sweep of the top five spots. John Chambers (18:35), Miguel Garcia (18:36), Jimmy Recinos (18:36) and J.T. Schexnadyder (19:36) finished in the top five to give Myrtle Beach a perfect score of 15.

North Myrtle Beach’s Matthew Taylor (20:02) and Lucas Gschwandtner (20:04) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Myrtle Beach Conner Corvett (20:14), David Nance (20:16) and Craig Chapman (20:18) rounded out the top 10.

North Myrtle Beach’s Benjamin Jenerette broke her own school record with a time of 18:44 and sisters Drake (20:45) and Wilson (23:51) finished in the top five, but the Lady Chiefs didn’t have the depth to beat their rival.

Myrtle Beach’s Madison Tilford (22:06), Kailey Flannelly (22:20) and Angela Hervig (24:32) claimed the other top six spots. Faith Scow (24:41), Sarahna Hernda (25:38) and Haley Capps (25:45) rounded out the top 10.

Both teams will compete in the region championship meet on Oct. 22 at St. James.

* The Socastee boys and St. James girls won a meeting between the two rivals on Tuesday, setting them up for next week’s region meet.

In boys action, Socastee’s Chris Matlashewski (18:25) and Nick Koonce (18:28) took the top two spots to lead the Braves to the 38-21 win. Cameron Ammon (18:48), Nick LeFevre (18:53) and Neil Surret (19:17) contributed to the team total with top-10 finishes.

St. James’ Hunter Brown (18:42) and Joe Simpson (18:48) finished third and fourth, and Nolan Fuss (19:29) and Corey Falco (19:33) scored top-10 showings to lead the Lady Sharks to the team victory.

Socastee’s Crystal Shimer (20:51)and Jill Dudley (20:52) finished a close 1-2 to lead the Lady Braves, but St. James’ Samantha Cunningham (21:03), Christina Cunningham (21:11) and Kelsey Glover (21:19) claimed the next three spots for a 30-27 win.

Socastee’s Rebekah Booth was sixth, followed by St. James’ Karleigh Jones (24:48), Natalie Feagin (23:10), and Nicole Mathews (23:39). Kasy Ingram rounded out the Lady Braves scorers as the two teams prepare for next Tuesday’s region meet at St. James.

The two teams will compete in the region championships on Oct. 22 at St. James.
