Road-weary Pelicans suffer 6-0 defeat to Mudcats

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans returned home from a 10-game road trip Tuesday, but fell, 6-0, to the visiting Carolina Mudcats.

Wilmer Font tossed another outstanding effort in his return from Tommy John Surgery.  In his sixth start after missing all of last year, Font fired a season long four and two thirds innings.  He struck out five and allowed only one hit and two runs, one allowed to score after he departed.  Font was perfect through four innings.

But the two runs the Mudcats got off Font turned out to be enough.  An RBI double by Jeremie Tice and an RBI single by Justin Toole broke the game open in the fifth.  Carlos Moncrief then blasted his third homerun of the season, and second off Myrtle Beach, the other way to leftfield in the sixth.  It was 4-0 at that point.

The Mudcats hit the scoreboard again in the ninth inning, adding two insurance runs when five of the first six batters reached against reliever Ben Rowen.  Tice and Delvi Cid came through with the RBI hits.

Mudcats starter Francisco Jimenez earned the win in six scoreless innings.  Font suffered the loss.  Christian Villanueva led the Pelicans offense with two hits.  Leftfielder Jared Hoying did not reach safely for just the second time this season.

Myrtle Beach and Carolina continue their three game series Wednesday at 7:05pm.
