Saints’ state title defense opens with impressive win

cambhoops-jonesdribbleThe Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball team hit the hardwood for the first time since hoisting the SCISA Class A state championship trophy last season.

In light of Tuesday night’s impressive 88-30 season-opening victory over King’s Academy, it’s safe to say the Saints (1-0) will be in the hunt for another banner to hang from the new gym’s rafters.

The big question facing CAMB coming into the season was who would fill the void for SCISA Player of the Year Kendall Henry. One game in, the answer appears to be everyone.

Six different Saints scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Bernard Jones. Austin Guyton tallied 13, Matt Doria and Garrett Richards chipped in 12 apiece and Joshua Lang and Alex Newsome added 11 each.

Of course, it helped that the Saints jumped out to a big early lead on the Lions (0-1), allowing CAMB to empty the bench and get everyone plenty of playing time. The Saints led 18-7 after the opening quarter and went on a 25-3 run in the second period.

CAMB returns to action Tuesday at Waccamaw.
