Salem turns table on Pelicans, rubber match Sunday

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, dropped their first road game of the season, 8-6, to the Salem Red Sox at Lewis-Gale Field Saturday night.

Salem got on the board first with three runs in the third off Pelicans starter Nick Tepesch.  Shannon Wilkerson led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a throwing error by shortstop Odubel Herrera.  He scored two batters later on a single by Drew Hedman.  Jackie Bradley Jr. then singled ahead of a double from Sean Coyle to score two more runs an a 3-0 lead.

The Pelicans got two runs back on a home run from Teodoro Martinez in the fifth, bring the Bird within a run at 3-2.  Myrtle Beach left Jared Hoying at third base to end the inning, however, missing a chance to tie the score.

It was all Salem from there.  Shortstop Xander Bogaerts stretched the lead with a solo home run off Zach Osborne in the sixth, the first home run allowed by the Pelicans this season.  The Red Sox struck again in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Hedman.  Three runs scored in the eighth of reliever Ben Henry, highlighted by a two runs single, bouncing up the middle with the infield drawn in, to make it an 8-4 game.

Myrtle Beach did make it interesting in the ninth, scoring two runs with two outs on a single by Brett Nicholas, but it was too little too late.

The Pelicans fall to 4-4 and the Red Sox advance to 3-5.  The win is Salem starter Miguel Celestino’s first.  The loss is also the first for Tepesch.  Vinny DiFazio was the Pelicans offensive star of the night, reaching four times on two hits, a walk and being hit by a pitch once.  Jared Hoying’s fifth inning double extended his on-base streak to all eight games this season.

The series rubber match is Sunday at 4:05 from Salem.  Radio coverage begins at 3:50 on FOX Sports 1050 AM and 101.9 FM and online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.  The team returns home Monday at 7:05 against Winston-Salem for Splash’s Birthday and a Kids Eat Free Monday.
