Schaeffner lifts Lady Chants to third tournament title

ccuwgolf-schaeferFor the third time in seven team events this season, the Coastal Carolina women’s golf team returns to Conway with a tournament championship – this time it is the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate hosted by GRU Augusta, contested at the par-71, 6,085-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. Moreover, Coastal’s Lena Schaeffner claimed the individual medalist honors, her second tournament victory this season and third by a Chanticleer.

Coastal, ranked 43rd by Golfstat, won the event by six strokes over Kennesaw State and No. 21 Furman. The Chanticleers finished the 54-hole event with 15-over 867 score after posting a final round 288. The 867 tally ties for the third-best in Chanticleer women’s golf history. Kennesaw State and Furman totaled a 21-over 873 scores followed by No. 40 GRU Augusta (878). Troy (886) rounded out the top five in the 13-team field.

Schaeffner, a junior, claimed her second collegiate event title with her career-best three-round score of 4-under 209. Her score three-round score is the second-best in Coastal history, trailing only Jessica Alexander’s 208 at the 2013 M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate. Schaeffner captured the event title by a single stroke over teammate Malene Krolboll Hansen and Furman’s Taylor Totland as she equaled her career-best with a 3-under 68 during the final round of play.

Schaeffner’s final round started with a double-bogey on hole one, but she countered with a birdie on three and seven pars to make the turn at 1-over. She started the back nine with a pair of pars before moving back to even with a birdie on 12. She followed with a par on 13 before catching fire and playing the final five hole 3-under with birdies on 14, 15 and 18.

The tournament title was the 21st in Chanticleer history and 12th under the direction of head coach Katie Quinney since she began leading the program during the spring of 2009. Schaeffner’s individual title marked the 22nd in program history. Schaeffner joins former Coastal greats Aruka Felgueroso and Brittany Henderson as Chants to win multiple individual titles in the same season.

Finishing second in the Chanticleer contingent was the freshman Hansen, turning in a 3-under 210 score to tie for second in the 74-competitor field. Hansen (72-65-73) carded a 2-over final round 73 for her 54-hole score of 210. The 3-under tournament score was a career-best for Hansen. She closed the day with one birdies and totaled nine for the tournament.

Junior Bailey Cocca (77-73-73) finished tied for 15th overall with a 10-over 223 score. Cocca shot a 2-over 73 on her final round to finish with her 223. She carded 31 pars during the tournament and ranked eighth in the tournament field with eight total birdies.

Frida Castillo (78-75-74) tied for 30th, turning in a three-day score of 14-over 227. She posted a 3-over 74 during the final round, which included two birdies and 12 pars. Overall, she registered six birdies and 32 pars over the 54 holes of play.

Emee Herbert (82-73-75=230) tied for 35th overall. She sank one birdie putts during her final round. Herbert concluded the event with five birdies and 32 pars.

The Chanticleers return to the links March 23-24 at the College of Charleston-hosted Briar’s Creek Invitational contested at The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek in John’s Island, S.C.
