Seahawks knock off Chiefs for region title, top seeding

mbhoops-20 (2)Settling the Region 7-3A boys basketball title required a third-game tiebreaker between No. 1-ranked Myrtle Beach and No. 6-ranked North Myrtle Beach, and even it went down to the wire.

Playing at the neutral site of Conway High before a packed, bipartisan crowd, the Seahawks scored a 51-46 victory over the Chiefs on Tuesday night to claim the region title, the No. 1 seed and the opportunity to spend the playoffs at home all the way to the Lower State championship game on March 1.

The Seahawks took two out of three in the season series against the rival Chiefs, losing last Saturday 55-52 in a hotly contested game. The tiebreaker was no different, except for the outcome. Myrtle Beach led for the majority of the game but had to hold off a hard charge by the Chiefs in the second half.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Chiefs cut the deficit to 45-43 on a 3-pointer by Matt Lindsey and a layup by Cameron Gore with 1:30 remaining. They had a chance to get even closer after pulling down a rebound off a Myrtle Beach missed free throw, but Solomon Cooper stole the ball and hit a shot to make it 47-43.

Following a pair of Seahawk free throws, Matt Lindsey hit another trey and was fouled for a chance to make it a one-possession game, but he missed the foul shot and Myrtle Beach made theirs to ice the game. The win sends the Sreahawks into the playoffs as the top seed while the Chiefs settle for No. 2.

North Myrtle Beach came out hot, taking a 12-8 lead late in the first quarter. But Myrtle Beach closed the period with a 7-0 run and stretched it into a 14-1 run into the second quarter en route to a 28-18 halftime lead. The Chiefs cut the deficit in half at 38-33 after three frames but couldn’t overtake the Seahawks.

Myrtle Beach got a team-high 16 points from Brooks Swanson, who connected on 4 of his 5 3-pointers. Drew Allan added 12 points and Cooper scored 10.

NMB’s Matt Lindsey scored a game-high 21 points and twin brother Josh Lindsey added 11.

Both teams will host first-round playoff games on Thursday. Myrtle Beach will face Berkeley while the Chiefs will welcome James Island.
