Seahawks, Lady Panthers dive into season for wins

The Carolina Forest High girls and boys swim teams finished 1-2 in their season-opening meet at the Ripley’s Invitational on Saturday as 20 teams and hundreds of swimmers hit the “Pepper” Geddings Recreation Center pool for the annual first splash of the season.

The Lady Panthers tallied 105 points to defeat North Myrtle Beach (87), St. James (70) and Myrtle Beach (68) in a local sweep of the top four spots. Conway (12) finished seventh of 11 teams.

In boys action, Myrtle Beach (96) edged Carolina Forest (91) for the team title. North Myrtle Beach (46) took fourth, Conway (6) placed seventh, and Socastee (2) finished ninth.

Carolina Forest made five state cuts and broke four school records on the day. Both the girls and boys took first place in the 200 Medlay Relay. The girls team, consisted of Jensen Helgerson, Peyton McWhorter, Talylor Steele and Anna Satterfield. The boys team of Harrison Clinton, Ethan Nechemia, Rafael Adi and David Zevgolis broke the school record with a time of 1:48.28.

In the very next event, 200 Freestyle, both Taylor Steele and Rafael Adi took home the bronze medal. Next Harrison Clinton finished in second place in the 200 Individual Medley, broke the school record and punched his ticket to the State Meet in October. Peyton McWhorter won the 100 Butterfly and also received an invitation the State Meet.

Harrison Clinton was back in the water and brought home the gold medal in the 100 Butterfly and added to his state cuts.

Morgan Young placed third in the 500 yard freestyle while beating her personal best time by over 8 seconds. Peyton McWhorter completed her individual sweep with winning the 100 yard Backstroke with yet another state cut.

Taylor Steele overwhelmingly won the 100 yard Breaststroke while making a state cut time and breaking her own school record from 2016. Rafael Adi came in second in the 100 Breaststroke with another strong swim

The meet ended with as much excitement as it began. The girls 400 Freestyle team of Anna Fortenberry, Jensen Helgerson, Peyton McWhorter and Taylor Steele won the gold medal and sealed their First Place Meet Victory. The boys relay team of Harrison Clinton, Ethan Nechemia, Rafael Adi and David Zevgolis missed first place by just two tenths of a second but smashed the school record for the event dating back to 2009
