Seahawks, Sharks, Braves look to get back on track

Still stinging from last week’s 21-12 loss to Conway in the Victory Bell rivalry, the Myrtle Beach Seahawks look to get back on the winning track Friday vs. Wilson.

Gone is the national ranking, the No. 1 ranking in S.C. Class AAA and a 17-game winning streak that dated back to 2009. Alive is the Seahawks’ hopes for a repeat state championship.

“Anytime you lose a big game like that there’s disappointment, but our team is ready to move on,” said Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson. “They know our goals are still out there for us. You never want to lose, but this may turn out to be a good wake-up call for us.”

Wilson picked a bad time to catch the Seahawks at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. A packed house and hungry bunch of Seahawks can be a dangerous thing. Look for Myrtle Beach to get back to the team it was and can be and put the defeat to the Tigers on the shelf until next season. … Myrtle Beach 34, Wilson 7.

* Socastee at North Myrtle Beach: The Braves won this one in a shootout last year 46-34, but don’t expect to see the Chiefs’ new scoreboard put to such a test tonight.

The winless Chiefs have had trouble scoring all season, being shut out three times so far this season. They still haven’t scored against South Carolina competition.

The Braves have had a difficult season for different reasons. They have lost three straight games by a touchdown or less, which can take a mental toll on a team.

But look for Socastee to get some confidence back tonight despite a tougher-than-expected challenge from the Chiefs. … Socastee 33, North Myrtle Beach 13.

* Georgetown at St. James: The Sharks got a big win last weekend over Scotts Branch despite playing without their top two quarterbacks.

As it turned out St. James needed only someone to hand the ball off to Gregg Johnsen, who rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns in the 42-13 victory.

The Bulldogs bring a tougher defense to the table and St. James must be able to make them pay if they decide to put eight or nine people in the box to stop the run.

St. James has been a team on the rise midway through coach Mark Fischer’s first season and expect them to turn the corner tonight with a big win over a county rival. … St. James 14, Georgetown 13.
