Seahawks put up 52 points to get payback on Panthers

mbfoot-9cutThe No. 1-ranked Myrtle Beach Seahawks avenged last year’s loss to Carolina Forest on Friday night, winning a 52-35 shootout over the host Panthers.

Myrtle Beach quarterback Drayton Arnold threw five touchdown passes – three of them to Malik Waring – as the Seahawks (4-0) built a 28-7 halftime lead and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

After an early exchange of touchdowns – Arnold’s 35-yard strike to Kelton Greene and a TD run by Carolina Forest’s Dyverse Simmons – Myrtle Beach scored three unanswered TDs for a 28-7 halftime lead. Waring caught TD passes of 18 and 7 yards and Brandon Sinclair ran one in from 18 yards.

Carolina Forest quarterback Will Brunson, who threw for 370 yards and three TDs, hit James Long for a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit in half at 28-14. But Myrtle Beach’s Jaden Grayer made a pick-six from midfield and Sean Huggins booted a 31-yard field goal to reopen the lead. Sinclair added a 65-yard TD run and Waring caught a 48-yard TD pass for the hat trick.

The Seahawks, the 2013 3A state champions, credit last year’s 41-35 upset loss to the Panthers (2-3) for their turnaround and title run, but they were able to avenge the loss and avoid another late comeback this time. Myrtle Beach welcomes rival Conway to Doug Shaw Stadium next week while Carolina Forest stays at home for a visit from Lexington.
