Seahawks’ season stopped one step short of state final

mbfoot-22mvMyrtle Beach High’s quest for an eighth state football championship came to an end on the road at Midland Valley on Friday night.

The Seahawks (10-4) couldn’t pull off another late-minute comeback this time, falling to the Mustangs 28-14 in the Lower State Championship. One week after they erased a 21-point deficit to defeat No. 1 Hartsville, the Seahawks ran out of magic this time, thanks in large part to Midland Valley two-way player named Jaquan McCorkle.

With Myrtle Beach driving late and looking to keep their season alive, McCorkle made his third interception of the game. He also was pressed into service for injured starting running back Dre’Kwon Carr, who scored two first-half touchdowns for the Mustangs (10-4). McCorkle came on to score two more in the second half.

Myrtle Beach committed four total turnovers, with quarterback Drayton Arnold’s first interception setting up a long drive for Midland Valley’s first score. Carr broke free for an 18-yard TD to draw first blood and lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Seahawks finally got on the board on the back of senior running back Brandon Sinclair. His 15-yard TD run tied it at 7-all, but the Mustangs struck back one minute later on Carr’s 64-yard TD sprint and a 14-7 halftime advantage.

Myrtle Beach appeared to tie it again on a TD run by Sinclair but it was called back on a holding call. Arnold was intercepted on the ensuing play, and the Mustangs took control of the game with a long drive and 3-yard TD dive by McCorkle for a 21-7 lead.

The Seahawks struck back in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a 25-yard run by Sinclair, and the Myrtle Beach defense finally made a stop to force a punt. Myrtle Beach failed to convert and Midland Valley iced it with another 3-yard TD run by McCorkle and his game-ending interception.

Myrtle Beach ends the season and its eight-game winning streak in the last outing for 23 seniors, including Old Dominion commits Arnold and Sinclair, who finished with 138 yards and two touchdowns. The duo will play one last game at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium at next Saturday’s North-South All-Star Game. Midland Valley will face South Pointe on Saturday for the Class 3A state championship.
